Sporting Holidays in Italy

On the Lakes and seaside, in towns and cities, up in the hills and mountains there’s a sport for everyone in La Bella Italia – the most famous of all, of course, being ‘the beautiful game’.
Bellissimo may be the only word that David Beckham admitted to knowing in a recent Italian TV interview about his move to AC Milan, but football is certainly Italy’s national sport. Almost every village and city has a football (calcio) team and the Italian national team has won the Football World Cup four times — most recently in 2006. And there are plenty of opportunities for watching the Serie A season from September to May.
For other spectator sports, the homeland of the Ferrari has the Italian Grand Prix at Monza each year, 10 miles (16km) outside Milan. One of the longest-running events on the motor racing calendar, this is one of Formula One’s most popular venues and draws huge crowds of wannabe racers and fans every year — next race 13th September, 2009.
For racers on two wheels, 2009 celebrates the centenary of the Giro d’Italia (May 9th-31st) covering a gruelling route of 2110 miles (3396 km) from Venice to Naples and back to Rome. Whether as spectator or participant, Cycling is a very popular sport and Italy spoils for choice from tough mountain-biking terrain to gentle meanders in the rural green heart of the country.
From top to toe of Italy, watersports are splendid immersions. Around the Lakes, sailing and windsurfing are hugely popular— especially at the northern end of Lake Garda around Torbole where the creamy wakes of dinghies and windsurfers fleck the waters. There are plenty of schools and hire equipment stands on the shores of the Lake. Elsewhere, wakeboarding, jet-ski and water-ski are widely available and in July the Formula One Powerboat World Championship is held on Lake Como.
Farther south there is spectacular diving to enjoy along the coasts of Liguria and Tuscany and around islands — such as the Tremiti Islands on the Adriatic and Sardinia with many grottoes to explore off the crystal clear waters. Dive schools operate in all these areas and our Love Italy operators can recommend or organise taster sessions, as well as courses leading to PADI dive qualifications. Offshore fishing trips can also be arranged.
Lovers of extreme sports such as rock-climbing, hang-gliding and paragliding have options galore. After all, about three quarters of mainland Italy is mountainous. The Italian Alps run across the length of the northern reaches, while the Apennines, the ‘backbone’ extend from the northwest, near Genoa, to the south near Calabria. Operators can advise on the best options, including specialist climbing courses.
